How PYP works for your child

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is for children between the ages of 4 and 11, focused on growth of the whole child as an inquirer within early years education. Learning is based on questions and curiosity, supported by clear structure and guidance. This answers an important question for parents: what is PYP within IB learning, how does it work in practice, and why is this the right primary school near Amsterdam?

What PYP is all about

In PYP, we work on strong foundations in reading, writing, and math. These skills are practiced daily and connected to subjects such as science, arts, and physical education. Lessons are organised around themes, so learning is meaningful and linked across subjects, forming a strong primary years programme curriculum.

Students learn by doing. They investigate, experiment, discuss, and reflect, both in and outside the classroom. This approach reflects learning through discovery and supports inquiry based primary education.

Personal development is an important part of PYP. We learn to work together, express ideas, take responsibility, and learn from mistakes. Confidence grows alongside knowledge and supports strong child development.

At the end of PYP, students know how to learn, work together, and try new things. Ready for MYP, the Middle Years Programme.

A day in PYP, picture this…

We start the day together. A question on the classroom board sparks curiosity. What happens when you eat?

Grade 1 heads outside for a footprint trail at the Nature House. Counting steps. Guessing animals. New wonders of nature, right in front of them.

Grade 4 works on a language project. Pulling funny faces. Drawing different moods. Searching for the right words to describe them.

Before the day ends, students look back. They discovered a lot. Like how eating turns into energy.

Grade 7 can’t wait for tomorrow. Camp is coming up. They make lists, calculate costs, and plan together. Taking responsibility feels real.

That’s how learning grows in PYP. Naturally. Step by step. A strong example of playful learning in action.

Frequently asked questions about IB education, answered.

Is the IB right for my child?

The IB is designed to support students in becoming curious, independent, and internationally minded learners. It encourages students to ask questions, think critically, collaborate with others, and make connections between different areas of learning. Some students thrive in environments where they can explore ideas, work collaboratively, and engage with real-world issues, which are central to the IB approach. Our role as a school is to support each student in finding their strengths, developing good learning habits, and building the skills they need for the future.

What does the IB lead to?

The IB Diploma is recognised and valued worldwide. Universities and further education appreciate IB graduates for their independence, research skills and enterprising mindset.

How will my child’s learning be assessed?

Not just through tests. In the PYP, there are no formal tests. Learning is followed through observation, work, projects and reflection. In the MYP and DP, assessment grows with your child and includes assignments, presentations, projects and exams when appropriate.

What if my child needs extra support?

Then we talk. If teachers or parents notice that support is needed, we discuss together what is possible and what is not. That’s why it’s important to share this at the point of admission.

How will our culture be supported?

A student’s language, background and culture are part of who they are. At International School Hilversum, diversity is valued and embraced. We recognize and celebrate many different cultures on a daily basis.
