About our academics

What curriculum does ISH follow?

We offer the full International Baccalaureate: PYP, MYP and DP, a world-renowned programme with high academic standards and a global mindset. See also: International Baccalaureate.

What makes the IB approach unique at ISH?

Learning is inquiry-based, creative, collaborative and connected to real life. Students explore, think critically, and grow into confident, independent learners.

How are students assessed and how is progress reported?

Assessment is continuous and tracked in our digital systems, so growth and dips are seen quickly. Students receive regular feedback and IB-aligned reports.

What languages do students learn at ISH?

The language of instruction is English. Students also learn Dutch and, in secondary school, French and Spanish.

Do you offer support for students who need extra help?

We offer learning support for students who need a little extra help. For specialized or intensive needs, our school is not the right setting. In those cases families could consult the local municipality for available options.

What kind of facilities does ISH offer?

Modern classrooms, art, theater and design spaces, gyms and a friendly library. Students also use our flex techspace for innovative projects and local outdoor facilities for nature exploration.

Are there extra-curricular activities?

What are the school fees?

Our top-level international education is accessible at moderate school fees, since it is partly funded by the Dutch government. Pretty unique! See all fees here.

How international is the ISH community?

Very much. We welcome 40+ nationalities in our school, creating a warm and global atmosphere where everyone feels at home.

About admissions

How do you decide if the school is a good match?

We look at the Learner Profile, your Interest form, an intake interview and schoolreports to understand how your child learns and what they need.

What level of English does my child need?

Students do not need to be fully fluent, but they should be able to understand andexpress themselves in English to follow lessons.

Who can apply to ISH?

Families who qualify for international education under Dutch regulations. Work and residence in the Netherlands are key parts of this.

What documents are needed for the application?

Typically school reports, proof of residence and work, and relevant educational records.

Is there a waiting list?

No. Once we confirm a match, we offer a place directly.

Can we visit before applying?

Of course. We’d be happy to show you around and get to know you. Just book a tour.

Can my child join mid-year?

Yes, if there is space and the placement fits your situation.

Where is International School Hilversum located and is it easy to reach?

We are set in Hilversum, in the centre of the Netherlands, just outside Amsterdam, with fast train connections and a reliable road network that makes travel by car easy too.

Are every-day facilities nearby?

Yes. Most shops, sports clubs, services and green spaces are within biking distance, which makes daily life easy and practical.

How international is the area?

Hilversum has a strong expat community and many international families. English is widely spoken and newcomers feel welcome quickly.

Is Hilversum good for families?

Absolutely. It is safe, green and friendly, with excellent childcare, sports clubs and lots of outdoor space.

Is part-time work possible?

Yes. In the Netherlands we are very used to co-teaching, which makes part-time roles easy to arrange.

What qualifications are needed to teach at ISH?

You need a recognised teaching qualification and a good match with the IB approach. Experience helps, but mindset matters too. English language must be a piece of cake for you.
