Sustainability Day: Rethinking Fast Fashion

Every year, we celebrate Sustainability Day. This year, our theme focused on fast fashion and its impact on people and the environment. It was a fun, engaging, and educational day that encouraged students to think more critically about the clothes they wear and consume.

Throughout the day, students took part in a variety of activities. One of the highlights was upcycling clothes, where students transformed old or unused clothing into something new through sewing and redesigning. These unique creations were later showcased in an incredible fashion show. It was a great example of how creativity can give clothes a second life while reducing waste.

Students also worked on recording awareness videos about fast fashion, helping to educate others about issues such as overconsumption, textile waste, and the environmental and social impacts of the fashion industry.

We were fortunate to welcome several inspiring guests. Our keynote speaker, Sam Zegelink from the fashion brand Saint Muze, shared insights into building a more sustainable approach to fashion and entrepreneurship. We also welcomed representatives from Terre des Hommes, UNICEF and WWF. In addition, students from the Amsterdam Fashion Academy joined us, offering valuable perspectives on sustainable design and the future of the fashion industry.

During lunch, students were treated to fresh strawberries, vegetables, and ice cream. In the aula, several groups from the Sustainability Committee, including the Social Justice Group and the Gardening Club, showcased different aspects of sustainability.

A thrift store was also set up, giving students the opportunity to look through and exchange pre-loved clothing. This further promoted the idea of reusing clothes and giving them a second life.

Overall, Sustainability Day was both inspiring and informative. It gave students the opportunity to learn about the challenges of fast fashion while exploring practical ways to make more sustainable choices in their everyday lives.

The day showed that small actions, such as repairing, reusing, and rethinking our clothing purchases, can contribute to a more sustainable future.
