How DP works for your child

The Diploma Programme forms the last two years of school at ISH. This phase is about thinking independently and taking learning into their own hands. It prepares students for exams, and for what comes next. The Diploma Programme is part of the International Baccalaureate, a globally recognised programme.

What DP is all about

In DP, students work with clearly defined subjects such as languages, math’s, sciences and humanities. Alongside these, students choose subjects that fit their interests and ambitions. The skills they have built over the years start to come together. They know when and how to use them.

DP is not about memorising facts. It’s about understanding, reasoning, and expressing their own ideas. They grow into critical and original thinkers and learn to handle academic challenges. Their Extended Essay is their final proof. It shows their perspective. Their thinking. Their voice.

At the end of DP, students know it. They are Ready for the World.

A day in DP, picture this…

The day starts with a question that sticks. What can you change? In Global Politics, they discuss the loss of tropical rainforests. Who decides? Who benefits? Who pays the price? Students feel something. They discover something. And they speak up.

In Economics, the question shifts. How do you grow enough affordable food for growing cities? Scarcity. Choices. Trade-offs. Students weigh the options, do the math’s and form their own judgments.

Talking it over in the hallway, an idea pops up. What if cities could grow food themselves? The topic of the Extended Essay is born. Can vertical farming help prevent food crises?

Time to dive into the library. Reading. Writing. Sharpening their thinking. Students feel confident. About their essay. And about university life beyond their diploma.

That’s DP. Finding your voice. Getting ready for the world.

Frequently asked questions about IB education, answered.

Is the IB right for my child?

The IB is designed to support students in becoming curious, independent, and internationally minded learners. It encourages students to ask questions, think critically, collaborate with others, and make connections between different areas of learning. Some students thrive in environments where they can explore ideas, work collaboratively, and engage with real-world issues, which are central to the IB approach. Our role as a school is to support each student in finding their strengths, developing good learning habits, and building the skills they need for the future.

What does the IB lead to?

The IB Diploma is recognised and valued worldwide. Universities and further education appreciate IB graduates for their independence, research skills and enterprising mindset.

How will my child’s learning be assessed?

Not just through tests. In the PYP, there are no formal tests. Learning is followed through observation, work, projects and reflection. In the MYP and DP, assessment grows with your child and includes assignments, presentations, projects and exams when appropriate.

What if my child needs extra support?

Then we talk. If teachers or parents notice that support is needed, we discuss together what is possible and what is not. That’s why it’s important to share this at the point of admission.

How will our culture be supported?

A student’s language, background and culture are part of who they are. At International School Hilversum, diversity is valued and embraced. We recognize and celebrate many different cultures on a daily basis.
