As Information Technology finds its way into  every day life, we find ourselves, in education, looking at how best to address this. At the International School Hilversum we  started two laptop classes in 2003/2004. For this project, the students of the  Grade 8 classes were all provided with their own laptops, which are stored in their own special laptop classroom.

Students bear responsibility for their own laptop and do a good deal of their schoolwork on the laptop itself under the supervision of their teacher. Files and information can be brought home on a USB-stick or since the laptop class is online, they can e-mail it to themselves. This way, students are able to finish their work at home with the minimum of fuss.

This project was evaluated in the academic year 2007-2008, and it was decided that each year a laptop class will be added, so that from 2010-2011 all students have access to a laptop. The costs of the laptop will be part of the schoolfees. Schoolfees will be adjusted to this end.

SmartBoard (a digital blackboard, if you like) students and teachers are able to show their work in front of a classroom. However, putting their work on the Internet allows students not only to share their work with their immediate surroundings, but often with the whole world.

Naturally, the school is also aware of the dangers of Internet and excessive computer use. At an early stage, students are made aware of some of these dangers, such as plagiarism and the unreliability of sources. The school checks and supervises written work in order to detect and prevent plagiarism. Also, the laptops will not be used in all classes, this way we prevent unnecessary physical and fatigue problems.

So far, the laptop classes have been an exciting, successful and motivating experience for both students and teachers. We plan to slowly but steadily extend the project year by year, so that ultimately the whole school will be able to benefit from the laptop class experience. A project that will be continued in the future.
